When your business has an online presence, reputation management is very important, since on the Internet people pretty much have the freedom to say just about whatever they want about your business, and irrespective of whether what is said is actually libellous or whether you have recource to legal action, it is imperative that you take moves to reduce the visibility of bad reviews and other negative comments about your business.
Do I need SEO Reputation Management?
If you type your company name into a major search engine and negative reviews about your company or website show up anywhere on the first couple of pages of results then the answer is yes. Its a no-brainer that you need to take action to reduce the visibility of these web pages. if you are a relatively small business, you might want to look at the simple SEO reputation management strategy given below, but you might also want to consider enlisting the help of a professional SEO reputation management company.
What is SEO Reputation Management
SEO reputation management is a form of search engine optimisation, the objective of which is to fill up the first couple of pages of the search engines with results for which you are in control of the content when someone types your company name into a search engine. This can be used to push bad reviews and negative comments further down the search engine results, or to provide you with a layer on insulation in the event that such reviews might arise in the future.
The good news is that using SEO to manage your online reputation is relatively straightforward most of the time. The techniques you will need to use though, go against the grain of those usually recommended for effective search engine optimisation.
Using Web Directories for SEO Reputation Management
First off, you will need to use web directories, a source of links for your website which is usually discouraged by competent SEO consultants, or at least discouraged as a source of links which should make up any significant proportion of an SEO campaign. You need to use web directories that get indexed rather quickly in order to move the reviews down in good time.
www.joeant.com
and
www.mygreencorner.com
are two web directories that get indexed rather quickly, but there are 1000s more to go at. See for instance, our list of web directories here.
Don'ts for SEO Reputation Management
Don't use paid for directories, because there are many out there for free. If you need to use more powerful websites to push down bad reviews though, you may then need to consider paid-for expedited directories such as Yell and the Yahoo web directory. Usually though these should be used for marketing rather than reputation management.Don't use social media sites such as Digg, Yahoo Buzz or Propeller. Such social news services are on a timeline and they will rank well when they are fresh but will drop down in the rankings after only a short time.

SEO Reputation Management is part of lots of large companies, but they don't accept this thing in public. You have shown just one tactic, but they are using lots of other tactics to gain their raputation.
Hi Deric, thanks for popping by. True, I guess this is just one simple thing that most small businesses can do for themselves out of the entire arsenal - just an enabler if you like for smaller businesses that don't have the cash to invest in consultancy or more involved tactics.
Creating brands worth evangelizing about is often misunderstood. The connection between the core values - the soul of the company and the soul of the customer - is why customers evangelize. They have found a temple of core value at which to worship. It’s mythic. It’s epic. The brand becomes icon because it connects to the subconscious yearnings of the customer, imprinting on the brain. The pictured emotional experience becomes a conduit through which the customer can again be touched by those core values.
Those pictures and emotions then become language in the brain of the customer. And it’s the language of evangelism.

the strategy you have using web directories for rep management, i must admit, i'm hearing for the first time... many web directories are pretty strict in terms of people sticking to their guidelines for submission and im afraid that 'some' of them do not allow what you are suggesting... but i'm assuming it's a tried and tested technique that really works... learned a lot of 'unique tricks', sure to get back for more, more power!

Reputaion Management is sometimes a must-have. I know some shops with some "problems" in the past or some poeple linked with unwanted websites. It's better to prevent this.

Hi Lette,
thanks for stopping by. I'm not sure I get your point, reputation management is really about reacting to and quashing negative publicity in this context, irrespective of whether its satire, libel or general humour. Maybe my Babel Fish transaltion wasn't too good and I only know about 12 characters of Chinese simplified, so excuse me if I misunderstood.
Good article. I always learn a lot from your posts and really appreciate it! I wish you a Happy New Year. Regards, Martin

Thank you for the insightful post.Free methods with useful ideas and helping tips will definitely result into effective results.Hi
With the introduction of Google Instant I think reputation management is going to be more important than ever.
Even before people had issues with Google's autocomplete function where you type in the name of the company and Google suggests negative search terms.
Now with Google instant the risk is greater when people can see results based on those negative search terms in real time.
Thanks for this useful information and these opinions are very
important because they consider the subject from all sides
