Internet Marketing Vanity - SEO 101: the title tag
A small rant for the day...
Have you ever noticed how it is very often vanity which stands between web sites and even the most modest search engine visibility or search engine marketing success? Personally, I've lost count of the number of times that the first words in a website's title tag were the company name and the same goes for first level headings. Businesses, webmasters and web site designers all need to be aware that the most important thing about a company is not its name but the products and services that the company offers. It is these that the consumer is searching for, and if the important keywords are not given in the most contextually important places on a web page then that web page will not bring in the traffic it ought to be.
So rant now over, I'll say a few words about the title tag.
- The title tag should contain the most relevant keywords which contextually describe the content on a web page
- Each web page should have its title tag specifically tailored for its content
- If you do need to put the company name in the title tag, then put it at the end
- Ideally the title tag should use no more than ten words, you can get away with a few more at a push but avoid being spammy at all costs
- If your web page is place/location specific then get the place name in there

Stumble It!
