Google Maps UK Map

Google Maps UK Map

Looking around the default home page for Google Maps in the UK I just noticed that there are some big omissions in the default scale UK map. Glasgow is there, but not Edinburgh, Hartlepool but not Newcastle, Preston but not Liverpool. How bizarre that Google Maps, the most prominent cartographical authority online omits these places in favour of much smaller towns.

With just one click of magnification all these big cities appear, but Hartlepool dissapears and it takes 2 clicks of magnification before Bradford appears? Did Hartlepool sink into the sea?

Even more strangely, when you reduce the map scale two clicks from the default Edinburgh reappears.

I always thought the art of cartography was one of accuracy of scale and proportion. Maybe I was wrong.

I do agree with your thoughts and it is also not believable for me that Google maps can do this.
